My red footed tortoise seems to become very active right around 8 p.m. And will 'run' from one end of his home to the other. Its winter where i live so i cant let him outside to roam. Is this behavior normal?
I don't know really about redfoots, but it seems most torts are sleeping before then. Does he have a hide to go into and are your lights off at that time? Most have lights on at 6-7am and off at 6-7pm.
You may have it too hot in his habitat. When heating the redfooted tortoise's habitat, you can't go by what we tell people about their sulcatas, steppes and other desert-type species. The redfooted habitat should maintain an overall temp betweein 80F and 85F, with no hot spots.
Also, a more subdued lighting is appreciated by redfooted tortoises, and in this case, the tube-type UVB lighting works better than the MVB type.
So many possible variables...its almost impossible to say. How long have you had your tortoise? Has this behavior been going on for the whole time? How long exactly has this behavior been going on? What is your temps/humidity? When are the lights off?
It could also be from a change in YOUR daily pattern....In other words, all used to be silent around his cage but now your coming into the room to work out, play on the computer...Anything.
Maybe he wants more room to roam? Pics of your setup would be useful.
As I said, the variables are endless. Just make sure your temps/humidity, daily feeding and soaking regime are okay and there should be nothing to worry about.
Tyrone does that occasionally ... He will nap all evening and just when I think it's time to turn out the lights he wakes up and stomps from one end to the other...back and forth. He will then go have a soak and a nibble of food and off to his hide he goes and sleeps. It usually lasts about 40 minutes.
Yesterday he was pretty active, today I had to go out and when I got home he was sleeping. Now he is stomping back and forth back and forth.
If it happens around the same time every night, it just maybe he is looking for a snack and some exercise
