Hi,
I am new here and just trying to get some extra info on red footed tortoise care/feeding. I work for a small pet store and thou I don't personal have one of my own I am doing some outside research to better understand how to care red footed tortoises the right way. In the past I have seen little guys come in and some right away get settled in others just decide they don't want to eat. I want to find ways to make a red footed more at home and maybe find out some new foods that may help those who don't want to eat right away eat.
We normally house them in a 20 long( baby) we give them a house to hide under, water dish they could soak in if they wanted, we have bark on the bottom and some dirt/moss under their house. I have seen people use hay but I guess I first would ask about the worse case. Is it normal for a healthy tostoise to not want to eat due to stress?
We have used kale, collarad greens, carrots berries and bananas. I want to learn everything I can about these amazing guys so please tell me if I am wrong about something.

check your temps ......and caution on "Nanners"...they are tortie crack and they will get " hooked" on them and start to refuse other foods.
Sift thru the info here on the forum ,,,under RF's. There are alot of very knowledgable RF keepers/breeders here who ALL have contributed to the care and keep of RF's.

There is a lot of good info on-line about red-footeds. I have tried to collect as much of it as I can in the Tortoise Library- link is in my signature. Besides articles, I also have a lot of links collected there.

Hi KLittlefoot:

Welcome to the Tortoise Forum!!

What would you like for us to call you?

Also, when we know approximately where you are, it helps us design our answers to better fit your questions.

I give you a lot of credit for trying to learn about the tortoises you have for sale. I wish we could say that about ALL the pet stores. Most of them give out poor if not bad information.

I do my best. I am a manager and I have worked for this store for 6 years now. Over the years i have learned a lot from talking with customers, other associates and doing personal research. Being a manager and finally getting an idea on how that works I really want to teach others how to care for their animals right so that maybe less animals would end up in shelters. Even more happy animals and happy owners.

Thanks to you, I have started a project I have been thinking about for a while. The Tortoise Library will offer a one-page PDF for red-footed care, nicely laid out, etc... eventually.

For now, here is what it will say, and I am WAY open to ideas and suggestions:
https://sites.google.com/site/tortoiselibrary/red-foots/one-page-care-sheet

If you can use it and will only offer it for free, you are welcome to use it until I get the good one done- probably in another month or so.
