I have one Redfoot who is about a year old but what I'm wondering is is he lonely?? Do redfoots need companions or are they ok by themselves? Thanks!

Hi cassiekitten:

Welcome to the Tortoise Forum!!

What would you like for us to call you?

Also, when we know approximately where you are, it helps us design our answers to better fit your problem.

Redfoot tortoises are one species that seems to be able to get along with other tortoises in their habitat. Most tortoises are solitary creatures and don't like other tortoises. Your tortoise isn't lonely. They prefer to be alone and not have to share their space or food. If you want to get another tortoise for YOU, that's fine, but your tortoise doesn't need a companion.

Yvonne's answer here is what I agree with and, from what I can tell, is concurrent with most of the forum's opinions.

I purchased two cherryhead hatchlings that are currently getting along fine, but I may have to separate them in the future. If you want another redfoot, just go into it with the caveat that you will need double the space, regardless of whether or not you separate them.

I am 95% in agreement with the above, but have noticed that my guys, while perfectly OK on their own, are even better with others. I don't know how to state that mathematically- they are 100% OK without companions, and even more 100% better with them?

Agreed I have my large red foot 13" separated from my 4" cherry head they don't care if they are with each other or not but they do like each other and the little one even hops on the big ones back and goes for a ride
