Shine....Sorry about your loss...I know first hand how devistating it can be. Try and make something positive of this experience and perhaps a lesson. I myself thinking I’m the perfect tort keeper have lost animals I truly loved. As my collection grew, every once in awhile , it seemed I lost one of them …and I didn’t know why? One valuable piece of advice I got one day , was “with any exotics and the more animals you have , you will encounter loss, no matter what you do to perfection“. So hang in there , keep an eye on the little one ……good luck ~

I did forget to mention that I did switch out the cursed blacklight with a CHE. Hot spot is about 100'F but the rest of the tub tapers into the lower 80's.

Thanks for all the kind words. I'm still bummed at the little one's death, but I'm slowly encouraged by the gradual progress of his slightly older counterpart. This morning, I actually found him with his eyes open and he was picking at his food some.

Attached are some pics of his habitat and the minor changes I made. The primary heat source is a CHE, and UV is (going to be) a 5.0 Repti-Glo tube bulb. I just have a normal little 30watt inc bulb for visible light for the past 2 days because the first UV bulb went out (going to store to get another tonight).

I did replace the towel with half of the tub's lid. Hopefully, this will retain humidity a little better.

[In that last pic, you can barely see him under that one fern frond toward the center!]

Think of his death this way. You will be treating the other tortoises with extra special love, care, and attention to their environment. You can't replace your lost one, but you can make a HUGE difference in your other tortoise's lives.
