Hello there. I am thinking of getting a russian tort. I had to leave mine in NH (living in Arizona now), But have some questions if anyone can help me with. How many can I have together? I do plan on making a huge inviroment for them, In fact it will be huge. I like the bigger the better. Can I stop them from breeding? I dont want to have babies. And the biggest question....... Is it hard to keep the tiny babies healthy and strong? I am scared to death of getting some of them tiny little things, when i got mine he was full sized. Okay enough of questions.......well for now, lol.

How many are you planning on getting? the best way to stop the from breeding is to keep them separate. Males tend to either fight or breed sometimes a female is not needed for them to try. as babies they can be kept together but as they mature they may or may not start fighting.

thank you dmmj for your reply. I should just get 2. Can you tell between male and female when they are young? and do the females fight also? I hate fighting, wish all could get along lol.

Young ones are next to impossible to sex, some breeders temp incubate them for females but it is still just a greatr chance no guarantee of a certain sex. Usually females (rare in the pet trade) tend to get along better but they can also fight, the bigger the enclosure the better chance they will get along without any problems, I have 2 males and 1 female and the female is kept separate because the male loves to mount her every chance he gets, my males don't fight because they have a nice big outside enclosure so they don't come into contact except feeding time, and then they are usually to interested in eating then fighting.
