I'm trying to convince my parents to let me buy a Russian tortoise. They're sceptical because they don't know a whole lot about them, and neither do I. Their main concerns are stuff like "oh they probably smell terrible" and "I don't want an annoying reptile in my house." And I want information to convince them to let me buy one. Thank you!

Well, They're not wrong. Tortoise DO smell.

BUT- tortoises should live OUTSIDE. So Thats a plus!

My leopard lives inside all winter and it never smells bad at all. Then again I clean out any feces as soon as it's there.

If you keep the enclosure clean there should be no odor. I use coconut coir substrate and I do not like the spell of it but that's not an odor from my tortoise itself.

Where in the world are you?
Ask your parents if they will let you create a beautiful garden pen outside. Say, a 10'x10' planter. That can be the Russian's outdoor enclosure. It will look pretty and the tortoise would prefer it, too. Find some photos online to show them.
