Just curious if anyone has actually got salmonella from their turtle/ tort ?
I understand that hand washing is key, just curious if anyone actually attributed
it from their animal. ( I dont really mean small children either )
I keep some hand sanitizer around all the time, but that's cuz
at work my office was across from a water fountain, watching all the people
use it in varios ways (adults & children) made me a germaphob & I always bring a water bottle.

I have never in all my years of handling wild turtles, and not with my tortoises. I don't always wash my hands right away and I'm sure there has been many times, specially when I was a kid, that I didn't wash them at all before touching my mouth, or eating something, or picking at my teeth. It's just not that common and that easy to get like they want you to think. Btw, I have an autoimmune desease, if anyone was going to get it, I should. I think it's more of a farce when it comes to getting it from turtles and tortoises or any animal. That's my opinion anyway.

You can, but I never have, and I can guarantee my hygene practices when I 'adopted' my midland painted turtle 6 years ago were not stellar!
It's all about how clean you keep them, and yourself. The myth that all turtle will give you salmonella when you look at them (yeah, but it's close!) surfaced when baby RES were kept in such poor conditions, they didn't live for a month, and people were catching salmonella because of such bad practices left and right! :(

I like all the fear of disease from reptiles in general. Dogs see cats as walking vending machines, yet many parents laugh while the family dog licks the face of a toddler or shares a toddlers ice cream cone.
