Im not using anything, the reason in rocks all the poop and leftovers get stuck in there. But lets see what the others think. I want to change back to one or the other.

I used grovel before but my turtles always eat the small pieces. Now I am using sands, it looks nice but difficult to clean^_^;

Is it normal if turtles eat gravel? Because I was worry they won't be able to poop σ^_^;

You definitely don't want them to get into the habit of eating rocks. A few might be fine, especially if they are larger, but it can become a big issue for them. (yes, with not being able to poop)

I think a lot of people choose to go bare-bottom for turtle tanks because they are messy. I think if I had a turtle that I would do a little layer of sand, and then some nice big rocks for texture and whatnot.

One of my fishtanks is sand, and cleaning it IS a little bit more of a pain in the neck, but I find the easiest way of doing things is to agitate the sand to get all of the gunk up in the water, and then just give it like 15-20 minutes to settle. That way you can easily vacuum the detritus off of the top layer of sand, and out of the water, without risking sucking up much of the sand itself.

I go with a bare bottom. My red eared sliders are about 5Lbs a piece and it's hard enough to keep the water clean without having sand or gravel getting in the way. Unfortunately a bare bottom doesn't look as nice but clean water is more important.

I used gravel until my 4 yr old son dumped a glass of milk in the my DBT's 75 gallon tank... I had to completely break it down and clean it. Now that I have had to rebuild the tank I use a small amount of gravel and river rock... The river rock gives the tank a more natural look...
