I don't like to use sand at all because it sticks to everything that contains moisture including a tortoise's eyes, mouth and their food should it come in contact with the sand. It also does not hold moisture and when dry gives off a fine dust. The only benefit of sand is that it retains and distributes heat well.

We have stopped using sand with all of our tortoise - any kind here - but if you are going to use it, use more clean soil than sand and the sand should be the kind you purchase at Lowe's or Home Depot that is called "play sand" it is cleaner.

Just what works for me :)

I won't use any sand for any species. I've seen too many problems.
