shipping a baby box turtle

Ok, so maybe not quite a baby, but 1.5 years old now. Still little.
I fly back to NY tomorrow. Can't fly a turtle (I called Delta and asked). But I'd really like to bring one of mine back with me. I won't if it isn't safe/possible, but I'd like to explore my options.

Can I safely ship a 1.5 year old box turtle?
If so, how?
He'd be going from AL to NY.

yes it is safe, we have a thread on shipping, try using the search function. is it legal though? I know NY has some laws about box turtles.
