one more question :)

Billy hates to be in a soaking dish (he crawls out immediately) and will only drink out of shallow puddles that i create in the concrete in the back yard. Anyone have this problem as well? how can you tell when the guy is dehydrated?

When they're dehydrated the eyes are sunken in and the shell makes an indentation on the front legs where it touches when they pull the legs in.

You have to put him in a little bowl that he can't climb out of.

He will adjust after a short time. Just what Yvonne said, put him in a dish, he will settle.

I don't soak my tortoises - especially my gophers. I just run a hose on the grass and they drink if they want to. I do soak sick tortoises - but not the healthy ones. I've never found it necessary.
