Tom has had a number of eggs that almost forgot to hatch.. this one from SONshine is in a hurry - it pipped yesterday - after incubating ONLY 108 days. Typical is 120 -140.

Very nice!

When they break the outer shell like that, but the inner membrane doesn't tear, do you ever tear it for them to make sure they are getting enough air? Or is is better to leave them be so they don't possibly dry out and start sticking to the egg?

I have raised a lot of birds, and with certain chicks I will start misting the eggs lightly about three days before they hatch, to make the shells a bit softer and easier to crack. Serema eggs can be hard as rock and the chicks have a hard time pipping, and will suffocate.

Kristina I usually give them a couple days after the initial pip to see how it goes. That 'inner' membrane is very soft so 'time will tell'.

The egg is in a seperate small container in the same incubator as the rest. The blue paper towel is saturated with water and on top is another paper towel folded up and saturated also.

I'm in no hurry because of the 'premature' pip!

You know I'll keep the progress posted. This should be a real beauty...

I felt I had to help by 'opening-up' the egg some. He was squirming as I took the pics. He looks like one of those 'light' SONshine babies for sure -

If he doesn't "pip" anymore on his own I'll go ahead and help him more. Even so he's early.

This never get's old...

BTW.. wait'll you see the design on his butt!

Thank you Richard.. SONshine is the name I've placed on the female that produces these babies [ sentimental reasons ] -

One of SONshine's from '07 -

I did move more eggshell.. and when I looked in on him I saw the top of his head for the first time. By the time I got back with the camera he had moved.

Look close and you can see some of the yolk-sac -

I'll most likely leave him 'in-the-shell' til he gets rambunctious. Really have to keep him "wet" like Kristina asked about...

He's basically been layin' low and absorbibg his yolk-sac. I took the "lid" off of the egg. Take a look at the design on his butt.. what's that look like?

The above was on the 19th.

He jumped out of the egg the next day.. took these pics this morning -

Still has a little of the yolk-sac left -

Looking forward to what his colors will look like.

Two more of his siblings have pipped.. SONshine's making up for last year now.....
