SOS! My 1-year old Hermann's baby Royal is drowsy most time, NOT eating ONLY drinking in the past three days! I am so worried! In the past month, I have taken her to two vets already (both Animal Medical Center and Avian and Exotic Center in New York) because she walks less, lethargic and peel off (but still EAT A LOT till this week!)

As instructed by doctors, Royal is taking antibiotic Fortaz Ceftazidim injection every 72hours, add calcium and UVB 10 hours daily . Last week she looks recovering but this week turning very week. Symptom:

1. No energy to eat move and even close eyes in most time!

2. No appetite I tried variety of greens (lettuce, kale, watercress, arugula with calcium) even feed her by giving close to her mouth, but she did not eat at all in the past three days.

3. When bathing her, she did drink water mouth by mouth continuously for one minute

4. Seriously peel off, especially in eye areas, now no skin at all.

5. Open mouth breathing occasionally but eyes are swollen shut most time this week. Vets think is very likely due to respiratory infection and has given her antibiotic already.

6. Small red strings in upper shell still exist and increase from 1 place to 3 places since last week. I checked tortoise medical books. In the book " Health Care and Rehabilitation of Turtles and Tortoises" it indicates possible SEPTICEMIA. But comparing the photos of red blotching in body in the book with my Royal red string in shell , it looks very different. Any judge?

I think it is more than side effect of antibiotic Fortaz and really hope to seek tortoise forum friends' advice and help to save her life!

Also, I would greatly appreciate if any experienced tortoise owners could help me check Royal face-to-face and save her life, I will be happy to pay consultation fees. I live in New York, but will bring her to your place for check if you permit. My contact ([email protected] ) Thousands thanks!

Attached photos:

1. Royal's eyes are swollen shut, skin peel off (especially eye area) and drowsy (after drinking water during bath, Royal sleeps again; NOT eating at all.

2. Red strings in shell just above the hind leg

3 and 4. Red blotching in body (taken from book " Health Care and Rehabilitation of Turtles and Tortoises" Page 239-240)

5. The tortoise books I am reading including " Health Care and Rehabilitation of Turtles and Tortoises"

You're really better off getting your info from a good tortoise vet rather than from us here on the Forum. We know about habitats and general first aid, but we have not gone to vet school, and can only tell you what we are familiar with from our own personal experience. For instance, in my experience when a vet has injected the tortoise with vitamins a, d, e, they sometimes give too much and the tortoise's skin sloughs off. That might I say might be what's happening to your tortoise, but then again, it might be septicemia. Only your vet can tell you for sure.

I am so sorry to hear your little tortoise is sick. I am fairly new to reptile keeping but do know some basic principles of caring for them. If you are dealing with a pet in septicemia, aside from antibiotic therapy all you can do is supportive treatment: keep her nice and warm (85F) and humid (at least 80% humidity), keep her hydrated (soak, soak, soak!), if worried about poor intake, do carrot soaks (baby food), also can try Pedialyte soaks. That's really all I know. Hopefully some people from your area chime in soon with some good contacts for you. Wishing you best of luck. Keep us posted

I second that. But also want to add that on this forum you can find lots of tips on how to "nurse" a sick or injured tortoise, how to support them through their recovery.

@Yvonne G @Pearly Thanks so much for your swift reply! I took Royal to both vets in New York on the list (Animal Medical Center and Avian and Exotic Center). This afternoon, original appointment is about NOT eating food for three days, but turned into RED FLUSH Septicemia (blood poisoning) in EMERGENCY ROOM!

Royal just had two antibiotic injection in emergency (Baytril 2.27% injection and Calforan Im/IV Vials Cefotaxime injection) in addition to forced feed calcium and Sq fluids in Animal Medical Center.

Currently, I am monitoring Royal in warm pad (vet taught me microwave corns and put them in cloth as warm pad). Her breath looks normal (not mouth breathing) but RED SPOTS still exist there.

I am trying my best to do everything I can and greatly appreciate any sharing of possible life-saving methods! Very grateful from heart!

I attached the photos of Royal's symptoms and medical prescriptions below.

Thanks @bryson white for asking! I am monitoring her right now. She is in warm pat made by microwave heated corns in soft cloth. Breathing smoothly and move forward her front legs several minutes one time (for facilitating breathing). I will keep monitoring her whole night and take her to hospital tomorrow morning as vets suggested. Vets said she is in very critical situation. They have tried everything they can do and told me I may lose her tonight. But if she overcomes tonight she may have a chance to recover. I won't allow myself to sleep in this critical situation!

@Yvonne G Your point of overdose is supported by doctors in vet as well. They said probably overdose of multiple vitamin causes the skin peeling. Plus septicemia

@Pearly As you suggested, doctors also recommended baby food carrot soaks (1st choice because of Vitamin A), Pedialyte soaks and supportive treatment warm (85F) and higher humid (vets recommend 60% humidity).

Really grateful for all of your input!

God bless you, Sweetheart! You are just like me! Totally consumed by caring for your sick pet. Just wanted to tell you that the advise I gave you I have learned from Yvonne G. She has tons of experience and lots of wisdom. It also sounds like you have found a vet who knows about treating torts. Thank God for that. Now you know what to do, where to go for help and where to turn for support (here!). All of us reading your thread think healing thoughts for your little cutie Royal. And I personally hope you did get at least little rest last night

@Pearly really grateful to you, tortoise forum community and vets!

Royal is trying her best to survive and thrive! She moves right front leg several minutes one time as yesterday night and looks breathing normal (NO mouth breathing). The fresh red spots on shell yesterday seem absorbed and turned to dark brown red.

I am going to take her to hospital now as vets suggested. Any further suggestions or experience sharing are greatly appreciated!

As suggested by vets yesterday in emergency, I took Royal to Animal Medical Center again this morning for hospitalization. I had a chance to nap 2 hours after whole night awake monitoring, but just now received the following email from vets. Now, after antibiotic injection, vessels are becoming leaky. I know I should be realistic as vets said but I don't want to give up Royal! They are also trying their best to save Royal's life. I am struggling if it is too much antibiotic injection and calcium injection (3 injections today) while she is weak. Vets said we run risks to try antibiotic injections considering she is weak. But if not trying antibiotics, she is also in critical situation. Any advice? Anything else I can do?

Thanks so so so much for all support I get here!

Tinghua,

Royal was soaked twice in water (not baby food or pedialyte - you can use those at home for a final soak for the day). He received a dose of fluids beneath his skin. He was syringe fed 0.3 ml of an elemental diet which is highly digestible - thus there will not be any significant fecal output from this. He was given two antibiotic injections and a calcium injection. Moving forward I have decided after much consideration to continue the fortaz injections you have (which is a third generation cephalosporin) and add baytril (enrofloxacin which is a fluorquinolone) injections once daily to this protcol. I think this gives us the best broad spectrum antibiotic coverage. He should receive this treatment daily ( with the exception of the fortaz which is every 72 hours) and we can hope for the best but I am not optomistic. He has started to ooze out fluid from the areas of his shell where the redness appears. I suspect that his protein level has dropped and his vessels are becoming leaky. To combat this we will start feeding him an omnivore diet which contains more protein than an herbivorous diet. I do not want to give up on him but I want to prepare you that I do not think he is going to be able to get through this. We will continue to help you in any way we can but I want you to be realistic. Dr. Donnelly and Kim Keltsma (technician) will be here during the week to assist you. I am only in the office Sunday/Monday.

At home you should continue to offer an option to soak at least once. You can use the baby food and pedialyte and see how that goes. Continue to offer the greens/salad as you have been previously but do not put any vitamin supplementation on it at this time. Keep her between 80-90F.

I have set up for you to bring her in as a day admit once daily. IF you would prefer to sit and wait for her we can time things accordingly you would just have to let us know that is what you want to do. IF this is the case you would be charged a recheck fee instead of a day admit fee and technician visit fee. Please keep in mind that these time slots are only 30 minutes. If you require additional time they will need to charge accordingly and we need to be aware in advance so that the time is blocked out for you.

You may come pick her up at any time now. The only supply(s) that we need to keep here for her is the Double Dome light. That way you do not have to carry all of these items back and forth daily. We have an enclosure for her and will be feeding her formula and giving her fluids beneath her skin. We kept some of the greens in a zip lock bag so you do not need to bring that back and forth with you either. We WILL NEED HER FORTAZ injection for tomorrow. You have a special diluted sample at home we made specifically for her if you could bring that we will administer it.

I wish you the best of luck this week with nursing Royal and hope that things work out.

Dear Dr. Brown,
Kim has taken Royal to ward one and half hour ago with bulb, food ( both daily greens and baby food ) and her medications. As you suggested, warm pat made by microwaved heated corns are under Royal. I have signed authorization and paid checked in fee.
I noted today she will have antibiotic injection, calcium injection and tube feeding. Will ideal antibiotic medicine arrive today?
I really appreciate you are monitoring her and giving her treatments throughout day and please do SOAK her. She has not poop since 3days ago, but I saw some yellow liquid today morning on her tissue paper.
I have asked one day leave and will be ready to pick her up any time ( my mobile 6462403956). Please keep me updated!
Thanks so much for your professional help, thoughtfulness and compassion!

There is a cage set up with heat on so it is warmed up for her. I have notified other exotics staff so they are aware. You will be giving her to a clinic aide and they will bring her to the ward and put her in the cage I have set up. Give them the bulb but I just want them to leave the bulb for me to deal with when I arrive ( I don't want her put somewhere too hot). You will sign an authorization to treat form and then leave a deposit/pay.
We will monitor her and give her treatments throughout the day and soak her. What time would you expect to pick her up today?

I do have extra UVB for Royal and will bring them to AMC this morning around 8:30 AM. As you suggested me, please reminder assistants PowerSun 100W UVB has heat and will be sufficient even though I do put another heat lamp on the dual lighting set.
Thanks again for your tremendous professional help and patience! I really feel very grateful from heart!

@Pearly and tortoise forum community friends, I can't thank you enough for all experience you share and emotional support you give! The leaking seems stoped.

Today, Royal had 3 injections antibotic Cefotaxime, Baytril and calcicum injections. Plus fluid was added into one antibiotic. I attached her medical note. I was very concerned 3 injections and asked all sources possible in addition to taking vets' advice. Tyler and Sarah from tortoise supply (http://www.tortoisesupply.com/) who give Royal her life also share my concern because Royal is too small for strong antibiotics, but they suggest me to follow vets at this stage (I strongly recommend Tyler and Sarah's tortoise supply. they do love and care tortoises very much and they are very reliable.) In addition, I found "aggressive antibiotic therapy" is indicated in the book "Health Care and Rehabilitation of Turtles and Tortoises" even though it does not say applied ages of tortoises. Therefore, now keep use antibiotic. Tomorrow Royal will return to take antibiotic Fortaz (vets dedicated to change to the original antibiotic), Baytril, calcium and fluid.

Also, vets mentioned they may practice Hetastarch Subcarapatial Sinus depending on situation. I know it is designed for the treatment and prevention of hypovolemia and maintenance of effective blood volume expansion. Any thoughts on its side effects?

This after, vets also suggested me to buy a Heat Emitter WITHOUT light (60W) during night. Royal is using it (85F 65 H).

I will keep updating. Thanks again for all your care and help! Royal's mom Tinghua

So sorry to hear that Royal is unwell. Fingers crossed for you that he makes a recovery. It is very stressful and worrying to have a sick pet and we know that you are doing everything that you can for him!!

@Pearly @Moozillion @CathyNed @Kori5 and other community friends, I felt very difficult to admit the fact that Royal had passed away on 29 June Wednesday 5 pm, but had to face it. Royal was a strong-will and thoughtful girl. She made her choice to leave the world in a natural way when her mom was still struggling in the dilemma of taking vets' aggressive antibiotic therapy (3 antibiotic injections for such a tiny baby!) or following a peaceful way. She opened her eyes at her last moment of life, waiting for her mom a final meet... I accompanied her till her last moment and brought Royal home for another day. Next day, Royal was on the way to Heaven with her brother Loyal who passed away on 17 May 2016. Now, they are re-united, eating and playing together under the trees of Blackwell House in the Roosevelt Island.

Thanks again for all your professional and spiritual support! Really grateful from heart!
Ting(Royal and Loyal's Mom)
