stars and status under the user name

Under a persons username is says things like "newbie" "member" or sometimes personalized messages like "ludicrous over leopards" etc. what qualifies a change in this status? when can you personalize what it says?

also, under the status there are yellow stars. what do those mean? how do you accumulate them? i currently have 3 and no clue why..?

The more stars you have the cooler you are.

In all seriousness it has to do with how many posts one does, and also how long they've been a member. I'm not sure how you personalize what it says though.
