what to use for outdoor substrate so far I have put soil in half and was checking out coconut coir for the other half but when you start adding up how much coir to use it can be very expensive and ideas?

Plain dirt. If you can get it from your yard, and it's fertilizer and pesticide free, then go for it.
unfortunatly I have to buy but at least its only $1.65 a bag maybe I'll add more soil and do a little coir on top hmm
top soil and cypress mulch are very cheap and would work well.
What tort do you have?

I use Sphagnum Peat Moss with mine, for my Steppes. It's only a few dollars for 3 cu. ft. I split mine, like you are doing.

My friend uses the cyprus mulch from the garden center.
untreated cypress mulch from any garden store. it works well. also top soil like I mentioned is even cheaper and works well for any growth you would want. soil and mulch mix is a great substrate for outdoors.
I use the organic cypress mulch and top soil from Home depot. The cypress mulch runs about $5 for 2 bags and the soil runs about $3-5 depending on brand. I buy 2 bags of mulch at a time as I am always cleaning out their hide , those 2 bags usually last me a couple weeks.. I have 3 sulcattas using the hide.
