I just bought miracle gro organic choice potting mix. its the one in an orange bag. i want to use it as a substrate for my russian tortoise. i heard mixing it with play sand is a good idea. i hve been reading similar topics about this soil and some say they didnt find any problem with it, one said it had gnats but most of them said they have been using it for a long time and never had a problem with it for their reptiles/ tortoise. should i go for it? i still havent opened the bag. Thank you.

Hi tortles:

Welcome to the Tortoise Forum!!

May we know your name and where you are?

If the potting soil doesn't have perlite (little white balls) in it, it would be ok to use. I prefer orchid bark or cypress mulch.

Hello and welcome to the forum. like Yvonne said, if it does not have perlite in it, it will be fine to use... I have been using top soil with not chemicals in it lately and it works very good...

It may not have perlite, but what it does have are little balls filled with miracle gro, a little bigger than BB's. I wouldn't use it. It is great for plants though.
