Hello, as most know ive got 2 hermanns tortoises.
Our petstore had told me theyre getting aspen and hemcore in, turns out theyre not any more.

At the moment im stuck with yuckie woodchips, and i dont want to use them! as when they dig, it appears the be digging into their scales and causing scratches here and there.
Nothing majorly bad thank god!

But i was wondering, apart form hemcore, aspen and soil (or bed-a-beast), what cna be used thats safe?

I cannot find hemcore, aspen or similar substrates locally because noowhere sells it only woodchips or playsand.
My parents dont like soil in animal cages and i if i put it in they would go mad at me and force me to take it out.
So that means no hemcore, aspen, soil, bed-a-beast or similar substrates.

What esle can be used?

order Aspen from ebay. what do you parents think is wrong with soil in animal cages, surely its whats best rather than what they like :S

I was going to suggest the exact same thing. The only reason I haven't ordered it myself is because the shipping costs people ask me are crazy...!
(how about putting some aspen on the SW ebay shop, stells?)

Aspen and hemp are not the same thing. Aspen is a tree and Hemp well.... lets say they make rope out of it.

What type of aspen are you wanting to use?
The Petsmart and petco carry the aspen finely shaved for snake etc substrate. It is the safest wood product out there I believe.

Are you looking for a larger type? Our Petco has the hemp bedding too.
And the small mammal section has a medium shaved type aspen.

Can you use Aspen exclusively as a substrate? How about Bed a Beast...it is very fine (almost like dust-maybe too fine on its own?)

T-P perhaps letting people know you live in Coventry, England would help you out. Hopefully there are people here that are from somewhere close that could let you know where you can find aspen or hemp. I know some people use shredded newspaper (dusty) or paper towels. I don't think its the best but.... Anyone out there around Coventry that could give T-P some hints?

i wouldn't say any of the substrates you have asked about are suitable Taylor. ring around horse suppliers in your area most will either stock it or order it in

Yes you can. check out these enclosures.

Fantastic! Thank you for the link to the pics:D
Since our guy passes urine once to twice everyday and feces once almost everyday...I am assuming you change out everything?
He is on paper towel until Friday (last fecal check).

In Coventry do you have "feed shops" for farm supplies etc? It seems here in the US that even if the feed place does not have something they are always willing to order it in for you.

Good luck.

i had this for a while, until water got into it somehow and it went odd and damp!

the website for easibed bedding says "Manufactured from carefully selected recycled whitewood fibre, easibed is also one of the ‘greenest’ bedding products and makes a warm, comfortable, supportive, free-draining bed that stays dry on top. Horses on easibed also stay cleaner as it doesn’t cling to manes, tails or rugs."

Hehehe:D
Is it strong like cedar?
Or pretty benign like the aspen?
I would think if is mild smelling it would be good to give a try.
