The farm across from my ranch grows tons of sunflowers every year and they get huge. The leaves are sometimes dinner plate size and remind me of grape leaves in texture and appearance.

Are the leaves edible?

I do not know if they are on any "approved" list, however I had a overly aggressive male that we had stay at a friend's property knock down and eat 3 or 4 whole (young) sunflowers while he was there. I didn't notice any ill effects. His stools were normal and I'm sure he would eat it again.

Yeah, that sounds like something a sulcata would do.

I asked "GOOGLE" that question and one of the answers that came back said that the leaves and stalks are ground up as fodder. So, I think the answer would be "yes."

I've fed it to my tortoises, not one of their favorites but they will eat it sometimes.

They are edible and should be safe as a regular portion of the diet. My one caution is that sunflowers are heavy feeders and may have been grown in soil fertilized with lots of chemicals.

I recall seeing a bird go down my row of sunflower sprouts and eat every single one of them. Today I found "baby sunflower leaves" in the salad section of my market. Package says they are grown free of chemicals and pesticides, and my two little leos got to sample them along with spring mix. They pronounced the meal tasty!

Tom-
I have sunflowers in my new Ornate box turtle's pen. The first couple I fed to the adult Sulcatas got picked at and they did not seem to be too crazy about them. After that, they munched them down and even eat the stalk. The only side affect is they want more. :p
