I am thinking about getting a temp gun, but can you guys actually check the tort's temp by pointing it at the shell? I understand that you can check the surface but how about the tort itself (minus the eyes of course)?

What you would be checking is shell temp and even that can be misleading.

I would actually think that you need to know the core temps, not the shell,
I could be wrong .

They are handy for checking odd places- in hides, water bowl temps, etc. but not so much for the temp of your tortoise... unless maybe you shot it in the armpit or something.

I mainly use mine for checking temps around the indoor enclosure and ground temps in the shade outside to make sure it is not too cold on the ground. Congrats, it is a great thing to have!
