Hi Darkly:

Welcome to the forum!!

Its always best to plan on an outside enclosure for a tortoise, no matter what kind. The outside enclosure would be the permanent home, while an indoor enclosure would be only for inclement weather.

Please take some time to go through our section on redfoot tortoises. I'm sure all your questions will be answered. But in case you DO find you need more answers, please pose your specific questions and we'll be happy to help you.

May we know your name and where you're from?

Personally I would not recommend a red foot for a apartment , but that is just me, you can feed them cat food, just make sure it is the lean kind. We have a lot of posts on red foots and if you have any other questions feel free to ask.

I have 2 redfoots and I live in an apartment. Neither are adults. I will be moving in about a year and a half to a house so my plan is to get them into an outdoors enclosure permanently eventually. I wouldn't recommend them though if you're planning on staying in that apartment for the forseeable future. Instead, there are other smaller species that would be a better fit.

Cat food is okay, but just to be clear it's not what you'd feed every day. You'll still be feeding greens primarily. The protein thing for redfoots is mostly just for redfoots. Generally speaking most types of tortoise don't eat meats.

Redfoots are great torts though and if you are planning on have a house with a yard soon then I say go for it.

any suggestions on what kind of tort i should get and in all honesty id rather not feed it cat food lol and i have read that they eat lots of veg and fruit something i have already googled to my hearts content id rather keep them on natural things they would aquire in the wild other then cat food as that comes from a can and i dont see torts getting that unless they range upon road kill and *** for a bigger enviorment hopefully in a year or 2 i will be moving into a town home with a couple of friends as i am going to school and havent gotten to that stage in my life yet lol

do you live in the UK? I only ask because I know hermanns are popular there and a good tortoise for starters and apartment dwellers, I would also recommend russians.

The Original Poster is in Canada.

Redfoots do need animal protein in their diet. Pinkies are fine for that as well as nightcrawlers/earthworms.
