What are the thoughts on fake animals in the enclosures ... eg, a hedgehog or lamb or fellow-tortoise type thing. Let me see if I can find some examples on good old eBay ...

Something like this

or
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Hagen-Ren...900?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1c3d48804c
(just examples, not my choice necessarily!)

Also, what about humidifiers - any good, worth it or waste of money?
eg; http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2-5L-Port...arden_Hearing_Cooling_Air&hash=item43ca3c0fb8

Just wondered and throwing in my 'thoughts for the day' ;-)

I'm indifferent on fake animals. I don't think it provides any benefit or harm to a tortoise (I'm sure they can distinguish between a live animal and something that is not). It's a personal aesthetic pleasure.

I guess I'm the same way with humidifiers. Humidity is essential based on generally accepted best practices, but we could debate all day as to the best way to obtain good levels of humidity. You could spend the money to buy a humidifier, or spend money building a better enclosed chamber that wouldn't need a humidifier. There's give and take in both arguments to consider.

I agree with Neal. He spelled it out perfectly.

I agree with Neal. Maintaining a desired humidity level is the objective. Humidifiers just seemed like extra work to me to adapt them to my enclosure and then to maintain them. Plus, at the time I would have used one, there were many problems with the available equipment being reported. I believe that the humidifiers have gotten better and last longer over the last couple of years.

Well I can be pretty certain that a fake animal in Joe's area would be mated with... it would make a change from rocks, the drain cover, flower pots, the base of the basketball post, etc... We remove these things, but he finds new things to compsensate  :D
