can you give timothy hay to a greek straight up? or do you have to prepare in a special way? Could you buy the hay in the bag for rabbits or just grow it.

Most wont Just eat it.. if you take thier greens and wet them.. chop up the hay and put it in a bag with teh greens and shake it, they will get some of it and maybe get a taste for it..
easiest to just buy the bags.. Cheapest Ive seen is Walmart.

I've had better luck with the bermuda grass hay. Finer. Not quite as coarse for the smaller species of torts.

For the most part mine show very little interest in any hay at all but they will occasionally pick out certain pieces to eat, mostly stray weeds in the hay, not the timothy grass.

I get most of my hay at a local farm by the bale so there is a lot more weeds in much of it than the bagged stuff from pet shops.

In general I've never seen any Testudo species very interested in consuming most grass hay or fresh grass unless they don't have other food sources available. My outdoor enclosures are full of grass that I have to cut once a month during the warmer months because the tortoises have no interest in it!

Most commonly available hay (timothy, bermuda, alfalfa, orchard) contains a good amount of fiber which is very important to Testudo species digestive processes.

"Wal-mart was mentioned. Would they carry it in the pet section?"

Wal-Mart, Petco, PetSmart and most farm & garden centers sell bagged hay intended for small animals (rabbits, guinea pigs, etc...). Typical hay contains some moisture content. The bagged hay sold in the pet trade is usually very dry but some moisture can be gained back by spraying or even a short soaking.
