How do you refer to your hatchling?

I feel bad referring to my hatchling as "It" (hence the name Maturin for you Stephen King fans)

I've also been using he or she. Sometimes it's "baby". Other times it's just tortoise.

Before it's old enough to sex...what do you refer to your tortoise as?

I go from what the name sounds like. My hingeback yearling's name is Sunny, so I use "he".

(I've never read Stephen King, is Maturin a he or she? From what I've read it isn't really something that can have gender.)
You can go on what the tort looks like, you can eye it? Sometimes you get a feeling on what their gender is and just know

I use their name. I just name them and if the sex doesn't fit the name then I change the name.
I had a Lilly that got changed to Billy once his sex was obvious.
The others didn't need changing.
They don't have a clue what you are calling them. They aren't like dogs or cats.

"It" seems to be a he! The bugger gives that kinda vibe???
