I found this little fellow in my backyard, in Concord, North Carolina.
Can someone tell me what species it is, please?

the shell hinge means its a box turtle an eastern box turtle to be exact

This is an eastern box turtle and is protected in its home range.

Colorful little thing.
I used to see them in the woods in South Carolina.
They seem to like that deep, damp leaf covered ground.
