Enough to give my uncle third degree sunburn at the river and he was totally under a heavy shade tree with jeans and a long sleeve t-shirt the ENTIRE time....he is a really whitey ....tender foot.

I do not know the scientific amount, sorry.... :( I bet someone else here will have that info.... :)

I think it can vary greatly depending on location, and the amount of shade.

he more than likely got sunburned from the reflection of the water.

The closer to the equator you are the greater the effect. I read somewhere that there is more UV refracting around in the shade in Southern Texas than in the full sun in Northern Vermont

Ditto- The further away from the Equator, the less total UV. However, about 10% of available UV will be available in decent shade. If you can see to read, there is probably some UV there.

Thanks guys!! Just wondering if Low Rider was chilling in the shade would he still be getting a decent amount of rays, or would it be better if I brought him inside for the mvb?

I was wondering the same thing actually. I'm setting up a balcony enclosure that will only get direct sun for at most 4 hours a day (probably decreasing every day). I read on my UV A/B bulb insert that it's designed to mimick the amout of UV that would be found in the shade. This makes me think the only issue might be temperature.

The dosage of sunlight they need is probably only a few minutes a day. Usually, if you see them actually bask, it will be because it has been stormy, cool or overcast lately and they will get the rest of what they need just feeding and moving around.
