Hi I'm Kathy, I have 4 tortoises, sulcatas about 5 years old. I purchased 2 and ended up with two others a friend gave me. I have a problem, I hear a slight wheezing when they breath that just started. Sounds like they are getting a resp infection. Have never had any medical problems before. Is their something I can do till I can take them to the vet? Is there antibiotics or something out there?

separate thoses showing clinical signs from those that are not, and depending on the enclosure temp you may want to increase it...and then get them to a vet as soon as you can.

Do you see any bubbles coming from their nose? Are they eating and acting normal? How are you keeping them...lights, heat, enclosure? You just hear wheezing, can you tell which specific tortoise it's coming from? It's winter now and that means the air is dryer, what are you doing to increase the humidity where you keep them?
Those are a few questions we'd need answers to before we can give you much advice. Then when you narrow it down who's wheezing that particular tort would need to be separated from the rest and an increase in temperature.

Hope all get better. Welcome to the forum. So difficult to have a sick tortoise on a long holiday weekend.

Hi Kathy:

Welcome to the forum!

My advice is the same as above: separate the wheezing tortoise (s), raise the temperature at least 5 degrees and wet the substrate.

I've heard of wheezing in the redfoot tortoise, and that usually means the tortoise is being kept too dry.

If you have a dusty substrate and its not moist, that could be another reason you're hearing the wheezing. We now believe that the desert-type tortoises require a more humid environment than what we thought in the past. Cutting edge new stuff! Wet the substrate.
