We have a patch of waste ground at the end of our road. I think the neighbours have got used to me foraging there now... we have lived here for 15 years :D

My sister goes out occasionally with scissors and a plastic bag and walks the neighborhood cutting weeds for her tortoises. Funny that we're not self conscious about doing something like that, but we worry about how we look, if our hair is combed, if our seams are straight, if we're holding in our stomachs, if we pick our nose in public...I could go on...

I was on the way home from work last week and saw the central reservation just off my road in full spring bloom, dandelions, thistle and clover.
Obviously, I took a quick detour, crossed the road and started pulling up all the weeds.
After about five minutes, I've got quite a swag and feeling pleased with myself, then I turn around to see LOADS of people at the bus stop opposite staring at me.
There I was, work attire, pencil skirt, blouse, heels, handbag, stuffing weeds into my empty lunch box. I wanted to shout across the road, "I'm not mental, it's for my tortoise". That probably wouldn't have helped. Ha. If I was them, I'd think I was mental to!

Our gardener also laugh at us when my wife told him they don't need to pull any weed out of our yard. My wife and I will also go cross street to my neighbor's yard to pull weed out. I hope they are peace loving people and have no shotgun.

Nearly 30 years ago when I moved to NYC for school, my dad cared for the 2 leopards I had at the time for a couple of years. He was retirement age and wandered about the neighborhood gathering dandelions and sow's thistle every day. He'd pick a good bushel load at a time, but always made sure not to take it all so it'd grow back and also he'd make sure seeds were getting sown.

He was well known in town and was frequently asked why he was weeding everyone's yard, but also not doing it 'well' and what he was going to do with the dandelions. He'd of course mention the torts and that would satisfy people's curiosity. We would joke, though, that everyone must have been thinking he had lost it!

That's a great story ! I bet the neighbors were very thankful with him for removing the weeds for free !

I commute to work on my bike, riding along a public stream path and recently I've started to stop and harvest the weeds. The other day a couple of high schoolers stopped and asked what I was doing. "I'm picking dandelion greens; organic and free." "Oh, that's cool. What do you make with them?" "They're not for me, I feed them to my tortoise." "Wow, That's even better!" So yeah, people might think you're weird but once they know it's for a tortoise then they might even get jealous!

It's just embarrassing when you pop out to buy a bottle of milk and some bread and return with beautiful dandelions, but forgot the bread completely :D
