What is this plant?

Hi,

I live on the east coast of Canada. I have this plant growing in my yard (it was here when my husband and I bought the house) and I was hoping someone might know what is because our Hermann kept trying to eat it when we had him outside this afternoon. The plant grows very tall and produces a yellow flower in late summer.

Any help would be greatly appreciated so we know whether the little guy can eat it.
