No, they are not bad. If they have them all the time or they are real gritty, or hard then the tort needs more hydration. Texture of creamy tooth paste is not bad. It is the release of unused calcium, if my memory serves me right.

Some species of tortoise do not produce urates. I've never seen them in my leopard pen.
