What Substrates to use?

I have a Russian tortoise, and currently we have bark for him. Would sand work? I think it's walnut sand. What's the best substrate for a Russian tortoise?

Definitely NOT sand! You run the risk of impaction when he eats the sand that sticks to his food.

For indoor tortoises I use small grade orchid bark. You can buy it at plant nurseries. Orchids are sensitive, so they pack the fir bark for orchids carefully, with no additives, pesticides, etc.
