Why we cant leave the door open

We used to leave the door open for our new aussie mux,tinker,but we bought a doggy door. we bought one with the opening about 6" from the ground so that when the tortoises are out walking around,they wont escape. This is why.

My parents had 2 box turtles as pets for 15 or so years and they would use the doggy door to come into their screened in porch and beg for food when they would eat out there. The door was about 3 inches off the ground. It did not take the turtles very long to figure out how to use it.
