Well with winter around the corner my torts are winding down,

They have gone from waiting for breakfast at 8am to still being asleep at 12.

The thing I find funny is that, these animals are prehistoric so they must have some intelligence, So why does my mini that's 20cm long 15cm wide, try and hide in a box that is 15cm wide and 6cm long?

She ends up with the box stuck on her shell and she is walking around with it on her back, my question is this. Is she just dum or is she intelligent? Intelligent in meaning "If I get the box stuck on me, then no one else can use it and I can go to sleep where ever":D:D:D

it is funny, when i get home from work the first thing i do is a head count, I dont need to include mini in that as you can see her sticking out of the little house meant for the smaller torts.
will try and get a pic tonight..:D:D:D

My guys do that sort of thing as well. They naturally look for places they can 'wedge' into to make it harder for predators to get to them. If you have your torts somewhere where there are a lot of closely-spaced plants you often see them shove their way into the middle of it.

All of my hides now* are things like slabs of flattish bark, piles of branches and 'debris', etc. and it is interesting to watch them shove their way into the hardest to reach parts of the hides.

(*- I actually tested this over two summers- offering a box-type hide, flat bark, and a brush pile. Even in heavy rains, I almost always found them in the bark or brush.)

Funny!
Mark, you are right about wedging. Even tho it is not a natural hide, I have a rubbermaid with drainage holes buried more of the way into the ground with a wood roof. They love it, not much clearance. But they also love a spot with a large rock jammed up against a hosta...they can get in there!
I have saved some thick grape branches and will arrange them in a pile for next year, good idea.
Yvonne, I think your tort thinks she is a hermit crab!

My female RT will make so much noise, trying to escape her enclosure, that I eventually let her out to roam the room. Every time, she heads directly to the same spot, the corner of the wall and TV stand and will sleep there forever. Silly RT.

My 100+ sulcata is constantly carrying lawn chairs on his back, lol. He tries to go under them and carries them off.

My tortoises are always making me chuckle.
