Had 2yellw sliders left in yard in cooler. Flying blind built them 600gal pond. Friend gave us sand filter pump. Is it safe?20191222_171702_Film4.jpg
It stays clean for about 4days&then looks like a swamp! Another problem we added some small goldfish that have grown huge&the ammonia level is always high. Any advice? Help!

You need a biological filter if you want clean, clear water. And that will take time to establish. The sand filter is good for removing debris and keeping the debris from building up. Plus, they are easy to clean by baskwashing. However, the ammonium from waste will still be in the water. This will convert to nitrites - then to nitrate and you will have green water. Can't filter that out with a sand (mechanical) filter.

If you could add a good biological filter as well as the sand filter, you would have a great combo. Perhaps even pump the "clean" water from the sand filter into a DIY biological filter that you would use as a top to a waterfall. The biological filter could do its job without clogging with debris as quickly.

It will still take 6 weeks or so to esstablish the good bacteria. You will have a green water phase.

More plants and a bigger, better filter. I'll send a shout-t out to one of our members who has a beautiful pond - @Markw84
