My soil is pretty dead. Pretty much just dirt very hard to grow anything. Anything I can do that's safe for my tortoise to kinda bring it back to life?

Cover crops like any of the grains to help break the soil with their roots and maybe some clover to add nutrients into it.

I hope we helped ! If it's northern Calf. You should be able to get a lot of leaves . And if you berry them and keep them moist you will find a lot of worms in the leaves , the worms will break the leave down that will enrich your soil also . And yes a cover crop will help improve the soil also .

You can turn the soil with a shovel to loosen it up and add oxygen to the soil. Quite often this is all that's needed to revive a very compacted plot of land. Or turn it and add some manure, leaves, compost and mix it all up then rake it smooth.

Alternately, you can pile on organic matter without digging. Sheet composting or "lasagna gardening" improves the soil underneath.
