Leopard Tortoise Female Wanted

Hello All,

I purchased a leopard tortoise hatchling a year ago and he is thriving! I have determined that he is a male and I was wondering how I would go about getting a female around a year old as well. Any ideas?

Did your male flash you? If not, he's still too young to sex 100%.
Females are much harder to come by and usually more expensive then females. However, at a year old they are to young to sex male or female unless done surgically or if a male happens to flash you.

Interesting, I was not aware of this. I was researching how to sex leopard tortoises and I read that the males have a "V" shape by tail area and the females have a "U" shape by the tail area. Also I read that the male plastron is slightly concaved. And when I looked at my tortoise he had a "V" shape by tail and his plastron is very slightly concaved. So I was pretty sure it is a male. Now I wonder...

At one year old I would not determine his sex 100%. It's more likely a male because females are harder to get, but I would wait until he flashes you or he is older. I have one that will be 5 this spring. Looks very female, acts very male. I still call her Lillie, and will wait longer to call the sex 100% one way or the other.
At yours young age, it can still change shape and actually be a female.
However, if it does stay male, you will want two females at least to one male.

Thank you so much for your help; that is why I love this forum, I have learned so much about caring for my tortoise from it. One more question, what do you mean by the tortoise "flashing me"?

With leopards around two years of age some will flash and usually in its soak. If it's a male it will flash his manhood. Do a google search, but prepare yourself. It's shocking to see the first time, more shocking if you know nothing about it and he flashes you.
