Sounds typical.

Most very young tortoises won't eat hay. They will start to become interested in hay or pellets at around 2 or 3 years of age.

The digging is normal , and you probably wont have much luck trying to feed Mikey hay until he is at least 2 years old . I started Speedy on hay earlier by mixing hay pellets with his Mazuri. Then I cut hay into real small pieces , soaked it and put it on top of his Mazuri . Now Bermuda grass hay is a part of every meal . I do still chop and soak it , at least until he gets a little bigger !

I use the Mazuri (original) pellets and the grassland tortoise pellets. The grassland ones are like compressed hay. I mixed them together for awhile to get my tort to eat them, but now she will eat them by themselves.

The grassland pellets is what I have and I tried to sneak it in his meals and no matter how small of an amount I mix it n he don't eat any of it lol I though well I will treat him as a kid sooner or later he will eat it nope 6 hours passed didn't touch it so then I felt bad and gave him what he likes he just started the digging so I just wanted to make sure tha was normal. Is there anything different he might do as he gets older ?

All,

Im jumping into this late I know, but the original poster said "neither kind of the hay pellets I have mixed it in in small amounts".... He never said regular hay.

In my experience, a 2-3 month old sully should be gobbling up nice soft mazuri pellets, not turning his head away and not eating. Carter, are you offering nice moist pellets, not hard nuggets.

Maybe upload a pix or two of your setup, the group might see other issues that are in play.

Usually when you see a very active tortoise outside of his habitat it's because he's scared and is rushing around trying to find a safe place to hide.

What does he like?

He won't starve in 6 hours. And a hungry sulcata seems to be much less of a fussy sulcata.

This is my experience....

When I coddled my torts and turtles, they ate only what they wanted and it was not a great diet. When I made them eat what they were given no matter what, they often took their time, but did eventually eat it. And then they had much healthier diets. The earlier you start that philosophy, the easier it is. Soon they just chow down everything.
