Hi the other day, I found a tortoise in my garage. It was love at first sight. We have tried to locate the owners but nothing so far so we will make him a home in our garden. Can anyone tell me from the picture if this is a russian?

Can you post better pictures please? Good shots of the top and bottom shells, including the tail.

From your profile picture, it looks like a Herman’s.
Please give these a read and come back with questions :)

Hi, i read through the info you sent me, thanks for that. Very useful. I live in Dubai and the weather here is crazy hot in the summer. 50 degrees Celsius. Right now we have winter and it is around 20 degrees celcius and 14 at night. I am using sand mixed with soil. My tortoise lives in my Aloe Vera garden. He has plenty of space in and out of sand and access to shallow water. Is the sand bad for him? He seems to love it.

I wouldn’t use the sand. It causes impactions if eaten, and is a skin, nose, and eye irritant.

Ok, so you think the soil will be cool enough for him in the summer? It gets really really hot here. 50 degrees Celsius. :)

The soil should be enough, as long as it is not treated with fertilizers, weed killers, etc.
As long as he has enough shade, hides, water, and weekly soaks, he should be fine. You’ll just have to make sure that he is well hydrated :)

I may be wrong, but that tortoise looks more like one of many forms of Greek tortoises. His/her face definitely doesn’t resemble a Hermanns

Wow really a Greek one? He has 5 claws on the front legs, if that means anything. He may be wild, I have no idea.
