Hi- I’ve a 10 week old Herman’s that I’m worried has some sort of eye infection- he rubs his right eye with his front legs quite often- he’s ok apart from this- does it look like a know problem
It’s my first post- so I’m open to any suggestions
Thanks Johnny

If you'r using the curly shape CFL for UVB, turn it off immediately. These are known to cause eye problems in young tortoises.

If that's not it, get a squirt bottle of sterile saline. Be tricky and approach his head from over his back so he doesn't see your hand coming and squirt his eye with the saline.

You can also add a little soothing eye ointment directly on the eye (or lid). I use Vetericyn.

I’m not using the curly bulbs- I’m taking him to the vets tmrw- but will try the eye bathing technique- thanks Yvonne
Hello Johnny, and welcome from Devon. Your baby looks very cute -we have a Herman's,
, but he is now 21 years old. If his eyes get sore looking, I get Viscotears from the local chemist - it is a gel, and tays on the eye a bit longer = Just a drop or two, and you can use it as much as you need - it doesn't have any antibiotics or anything like that. It is also quite cheap - unlike what a vet might give you.
Good luck
Angie

Any of the different "screw-in" UVB sources are awful in one way or another.
It was my first guess too

I have a hatchling too with same problem I switched substrate to pure Coco coir and took him to the vet she got a vitamin A shot and I was putting daily eye drops in and is better looking than ever. So hope is out there mine looked like she was dead her eye where dried up and sunk in looked so bad drops helped alot but after that shot she was a whole new tortoise!! Now I giver her a 1 a week dusting of multi vitamin on her food and she is great I didn't know about the vitamins as a regiment. I hope your vet gets you back on track they are such great little guys!! Best of luck
