I just bought this sulcata tortoise. (Male) and I think he loves our yard but wanted to see how healthy he is. Been doing some research and see a lot of confusing misconceptions . Thought I’d see what other owners think.

I asked Yvonne to move your post. It would be better if it had been posted under Introductions, General Discussion or under the Sulcata section. More members will see it there. Especially members who live in California. Will you keep him inside the house in a enclosure or outside in a enclosure. It would make a difference because the outside enclosure would need to be insulated and heat and light source. Sulcata's do not hibernate or brumate and need to stay at least 80°. They cannot live in their burrow all winter.
@Tom or @Yvonne G both live in California. By putting @ in front of their user name. They will see this post and hopefully will respond.
Thank you so much. Your a lot nicer than my car forums when i ask for help people make fun of me or just leave me hanging with no help on how to navigate thru the forum. I really want to take care of him and feel I can afford to do whatever to keep him comfortable

Yeah... We don't do that here. Our goal and our interest is helping tortoises have healthy happy lives and helping tortoise keepers have an enjoyable successful tortoise keeping experience. Here is the correct care info for a sulcata. I'm at work with mobile internet, so I can't see your pics. Questions are welcome:

On the homepage scroll down to African Tortoises. Find sulcata tortoise heading. The first about dozen threads are informational topics. After that are threads that members have posted.
So at the top of that page there is a green box that says post thread. Click on that and make a new thread there or if you know how to copy and paste ( which I dont😟) You could transfer your original post. You need to get a post there. So more members will see it.
What were your plans for the winter time with your sully?
Does your sully have a name yet?

I’m building a winter home for him with light and heat this weekend. His name is gamera 😆 and when I get home I’ll try to move the post to that thread

Before building a enclosure, there are some great examples here on the forum. Just search for sulcata enclosures and you should find. It might save you money and also give you a proper enclosure.

Could you add some more pictures, e.g. sides, back, top etc. ? At first glance, I'd say he looks healthy, with little sign of pyramiding.
Hey alissandro I just had a quick question. I went out to my yard today and caught my sulcata eating a guava. He literally ate half of it and I don’t even have a guava tree. Just wondering if it was safe .

Your sully should be alright. Fruits are not good for sulcata's and should not be feed to them. The any fruit is full of sugar which is hard on their kidneys. There will be no immediate impact when accidentally eating some fruit.
The question is where did the guava come from? Is it possible someone threw it in your yard?
You will need to figure that out, so you know someone isn't feeding other types of food like meat to your sully.
I guess it is possible another animal carried it into your yard.

Yes I looked around and I do have 3 neighbors that possibly could have thrown it over but I have a camera set up and I’m checking

On a real hot day I will give Opo a peice of watermelon or maybe on his birthday. I will give him a few strawberries. I don't think a small amount of fruit a few times a year will hurt them.
