    Jacky And Daisy

Hi Natrah! I wish I knew how old I am, but when I showed up on Erin’s porch back in October, 2021, I was about five inches long and Erin could easily pick me up with one hand. She hasn’t measured me in quite a while, but she’d estimate I’m about 15 or 16 inches long and weigh around 23 lbs. I...

    Jacky And Daisy

Belated Happy New Year, everyone! I’m still here, just really busy. It’s been a chilly winter in the Arizona desert, so Leo has been spending nights and much of the day in his indoor enclosure, which he,ds heat and humidity really well but at 9’x3’x2’ is not large enough for him to do more...

    Dark color around mouth?

My Sulcata, Leo, gets a very black mouth when he’s spending more time in his indoor enclosure (overnight during the cooler months). I use coco coir as a substrate, and I think he may eat it, though I’ve never witnessed him doing this. It goes away during summer, when he’s outside 24/7.

    too sick

Maggie, I hope you feel better soon. Our temps are finally going to be dropping, the high today is forecast to be 104 then into the 90s for the next few days. My stubborn sully, Leo, has been ensconced in his rosemary plant (his favorite summer spot) since last Friday, and we cannot reach him...

Fans in an enclosure, trying to understand the physics

Thanks for the info! I will get the door installed in the not-too-distant future and will get him into this routine as you have suggested.

Fans in an enclosure, trying to understand the physics

Leo is about 22 lbs. He has a heated/insulated box, but I need to install a proper door so I can close him in when it gets too chilly. Right now, I'm bringing him inside when it gets too cold (or too hot, like it has been lately; I've been trying to get him to continue various burrows that...

Fans in an enclosure, trying to understand the physics

Thank you. I like to let my sully out to patrol on sunny days in winter, but I'll keep these sessions brief and return him to his heated house if it's chilly and breezy.

Fans in an enclosure, trying to understand the physics

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but does wind chill have any effect on a tortoise? To clarify, I’m wondering about 10-20 mph wind on a sunny 55-60 degree day, as we sometimes get in winter in my neck of the woods. I’ve always assumed that the sunshine is more of an influence on how a tortoise...
