Hi Tom. Sorry to bother you. Im new to the forums but am very interested in the testudo seed mix you mentioned in a post and since its almost winter here in colorado i was curious if growing the mix indoors is feasible? Thanks for your time.

I've never tried to grow it inside, but with the right lighting, I bet you can.

I recently got two 6mo old leopard tortoises. I have their cage set up and heat is maintained to 78 on the cool nesting side to 90 degrees on the hot side. The problem is keeping the humidity up on the hot side. The humidity is at 78% on the cooler side and both sides have a log that I have wet moss with, but the humidity under the ceramic heat lamps is usually around 50-55%. Is that ok?

Too low. Closed chamber is the solution. Look up Animal Plastics either here on the forum or on the web.

In my larger 4x8' enclosures in my cold garage, I use two 100 watt CHEs to spread the heat out. I just get timers from the hardware store.
    7. Tom
      Tom
In most cases a 100 watt will do it, but since it is thermostat controlled 150 watts isn't a bad idea in case of an unusually cold winter ni

In your article you mentioned a 65 watt incandescent flood bulb and Cermaic Heating which wattage?, I was wondering for what size enclosure this was for? And can you recommend a timer? Thx!

Yeah, your right :) I guess I am excited about my tracking from birth, the growth rate I meant.

Do you think it would be of interest to set up a place for people with babies can track the growth or health issues each month. This would give us all a lot of information. Not to mention fun!!

There are many individual threads where people do this. Because growth rates vary so much and for so many different reasons, I'm not sure what value it would have. Most people don't find someone who starts there babies as well as Austin. You hit the jackpot there.

Tom, I noticed you still have some platynoba hatchlings available. Do you know if you have males? If so, I'd be interested in knowing your price. Please forgive me if there is another more private way got contact you, as I'm new to the forum. Let me know and we can continue our discussion there. Thank you.

I'm afraid he's going to die on me simply because I don't know how to treat him. . Do you have any advice for me? And please don't tell me to call my sister.....we're sort of not getting along. She says I should just let him die, NOT gonna do that until I have done everything I can do. Can you help me?

....I have a 14 yr old CDT with mycoplasma. His nares are closed with something that looks like a scab. I used to soak him and open things up so he could breathe. Then I got some spray benadryl now I have the liquid. He stopped eating last Friday. So now I'm giving him the oral stuff. I can't afford the $72+ for his Vet.

Hi Tom, my tortoise has really dry skin around his eyes and basically on his whole face. He sleeps a lot too. Does he have a health issue? How do you treat dry skin?

I go up to 85 in winter since they don't have any other way to warm up on a cold overcast day.

hey tom i was wondering i just got my russian tortoise and is it ok to mix repti bark with eco earth loose cocunut an dhe is alway digging in the corner is he trying to get out?
      1. Tom
        Tom
I prefer coco coir for babies and fine orchid bark for older ones. I see no reason or purpose for mixing them, but I also don't think it will hurt anything.

What size enclosure is it? When they are kept in something too small, this escape behavior is more common. Most of them settle in after a few days in their new territory.

Hi Tom, hoping you can help me out here again For some reason this past week he has refused to eat and literally walks around and around his table all day!
I soak him in the morning for 10-20 min and then after that the walking starts. At night he goes into his hide as usual. I'm really getting worried and don't know how long he can go without eating or why this behaviour has started?

Hi Lynn. Start a thread on the forum and explain what species and size tortoise we are talking about. Also give the details of the problem and how you are housing and heating and lighting your tortoise.

I got my first box turtle in 1979. I started caring for Chelonians and other animals as a paid profession in 1986, and I'm still doing it. I've been keeping sulcatas and leopards since the early 90's. I've been using humidity and hydration to grow smooth tortoises since 2008, after many years of trying and failing using other methods and advice for two decades.
