Over the years I played with temp tests of various heat components. I ended up with just using the stanfields and no over head heat. It did not add any benefit just more heating costs. There are industrial lamps now that we tested and still not worth using but remain if we ever have extreme cold. As it stands the building is 40f over outside on the low side. So the animals are much warmer against the heat mats.

Analog failsafe that will kill all power over 80 and digitals that run the heat sources with probes.

Switch to turn power on or off for the season, makes it easy.
Animals have settled in since and know the routine. Even in winter they still come out eat/drink and go back in to the heat. Only lock them up when we have cold and rain for extended days.

Nesting females and male watching! In summer I open one flap in each door for cooler air exchange. It’s not needed but helps, building is very well insulated either way.

This is great!
I love seeing how others do things to get ideas on improving my own setups.
Currently I have an outdoor pen and I have bins set up inside for when the weather necessitates different conditions. I got some GFCI outlets installed out in the garden “cage” I am using to raise my tortoises in. I have 1 heated house built for my phayrei. I need to build 2 more for the radiata and the platynota. It will be so much easier to have facilities to contain them in place rather than hauling them all in and back out as weather permits.
Thanks Tom! That’s awesome info! These might help you:
Single Tortoise Night Box
I like my larger tortoises to live outside full time. My climate permits this year round with a little help. For people who live where it snows all winter, this type of box is still good for warmer weather, getting them out earlier in Spring, and keeping them out a bit later into fall. Double Door Night Box
As the years have gone by and I build more of these boxes, I learn more and more each time. This one is the latest and I incorporated everything I've learned over the years. I also tried to take lots of pics so I can explain in more detail some of what is going on. It will take multiple posts to...tortoiseforum.org
