Man - I really feel badly for this guy. I hope the alligator ends up somewhere good.

But I do feel its so reflective of people who get reptiles (or any other pet) without thinking of the future. Like what do you THINK is going to happen when you buy a pet that lives 50+ years.

He DID think of the future. He spent $115,000 on a custom room to house the gator correctly.

The government is disgusting. This is like the Florida officials euthanizing dozens of captive bred pet snakes with a bolt gun to the head for no logical reason.

Punish irresponsible people and do not tread on the freedoms of people who are doing their own thing and harming no one.

He spent $118k on something he knew he couldn't have legally. I would LOVE (in theory, possibly not reality) to have a as skunk a pet, but I know I can't legally have one in CA. Do I think its dumb weasels are not allowed as pets, yes? But if I got a pet skunk and spent $1M on my home for it - that still is a stupid decision on my part.

So would be getting a baby tortoise if I am 80 years old and have no plan for after I'm gone.

He had a license or permit for it from back when he got it. They knew he had it, they, the state or city gave him the permit. From everything I have seen or read, there was no reason to seize the animal
I unfortunately am not allowed a pet skunk in IL either. Would have one in a heart beat if I could. They are raised to be sold as pets
Aldabraman has or had one. Not sure he still does or if it's still alive. This was way back in like 2012 or so.
We are allowed farm animals in the city of Chicago. As long as we have the room and can house them in a barn or shed, etc, in bad weather. I have 2 pet chickens. What, 5-10 years down the road they are going to say, oops, we changed our minds, now we will be taking your pet chickens or a rooster because he cries, but they don't restrict roosters. I don't think so. The permit shouldn't have been given in the first place then. Did they not know it was going to grow? Idiots they are!
I hope the guy wins and gets him back!

His permit expired and he didn't comply to conditions when requesting renewal (build an expensive fence around the proprty).

That alligator is very overweight.

Having a pet skunk is like one of those fantasy things for me. I have always loved skunks. I was a skunk for halloween more times than I care to count. I almost got a skunk tattoo.

I had to have a skunk trapped and killed in my backard in NorCal and it was the worst, far more than if they caught another critter (tho I would feel badly about all of them).

I follow several on IG and damn if they are not THE CUTEST creatures on the planet!

My hub was not raised with animals. Then he met me, haha. He has helped care and loved all our animals over the years. Rats, hamster, hedgehog and more. He never though has mentioned wanting one. Then one day, we were watching something on TV and they had a bunch of pet skunks. He said he wouldn't mind having a pet skunk. I looked at him in shock and got right on the internet searching for breeders and if they were allowed, did I need a permit etc. I was so disappointed to find out we are not allowed to have them. The only time he has ever said anything like that and they aren't allowed.
So now I just have to enjoy the wild ones I get occasionally in the yard. From a distance of course 😁

also LOTS of Beavers, which I love almost as much as skunks. Baby beavers are out of this world

How about a fox. Skunks aren't allowed in Virginia but foxes are according to a fox rescue sanctuary in Minnesota. They tried to get me to adopt one a couple years ago. I had a female skunk years ago when they were legal to keep. Neat animals sorta like a cat.

I love fox, but never wanted to own one. I do love seeing them on my yard cameras. I think they are too much like a dog,so I just get dogs. My little Pom has a fox like face, kind lol
How luck you were able to have a skunk
Many years ago, I was a kid at the time my cousin rescued a litter of babies who mom was killed. I remember her getting them and caring for them, but I don't know where they went once they were big enough to be on their own. That was in MI.

My opinion is that they should not have taken away his pet after so many years. They could have told him what was necessary for him to keep it, and just check regularly that he complies. Cold hearted and cruel.

My dad's father (in Oswego, Oregon, and we lived in San Francisco, so seldom went there) raised foxes (I was too young to know for what purpose). Two things stand out in my memory (this memory is about from my appx 10 year old self, so 75 years ago) - they really stink, and they were silver grey.

I hate to think what he raised them for😔
I'm surprised to hear they stink. I wouldn't have thunk it.

He did have it legally. They took it because he allowed people to pose for a picture with it.

I've had foxes, beavers, and skunks. The foxes do have a "skunky" smell to them. I had gray foxes and raised two of their babies.

I had four beavers. They were wild caught adults that were going to be euthanized by the state, so we rescued them. Had the oldest one for almost 14 years.

Doesn't it occur to anyone else that OUR government should not have the right or the power to be telling us what we can and can't do in regards to having little pets, or big pets for that matter? This guy was housing the gator adequately in my opinion and trying to comply with their absurd and frivolous laws, and then they came and took his beloved lifetime pet. It ain't right. What about freedom? If someone is abusing and animal or harming people then by all means have the authorities step in when necessary. Outside of that, its none of the government's business if I want a pet ferret or skunk or alligator. How did we lose sight of this as a society. FREEDOM!

I don’t think it’s crazy for the government to prevent most people from having alligators as pets. Weasels, yes, Alligators, no. You can’t just “punish people when they do bad”, if it was super easy to have alligators as pets they would be released into parks and lakes and golf courses incessantly once they got to big for the fish tank they bought for it. It already happens too much with illegal ones, I shudder to think what would happen if they were easily allowed. It’s not good for the alligators, the wild animals where they are released, the pets they eat, or the people who might get attacked. And you’d never find the dumper anyway.
