I have two hardy hibiscus plants growing in large 20 gallon pots that I roll into my garage during the cold winters. They aren't big (about 18-24 inches tall at full growth in the summer) but they have been reasonably healthy. However, last year their growth was much slower than before and they produced almost zero flowers so I'm thinking that even though the pots are more than big enough for the size of the plants, they might need some nutritional assistance.

Doing some searching online, many hibiscus growers recommend fertilizer with high nitrogen, low phosphorus, and very high potassium. In particular, quite a few specifically recommend Jack's Classic Tropical Food to promote stem and leaf growth and flower production, and I was wondering if it would be OK to put some of that into the soil in the pots and still have it be safe to give the leaves and flowers to my Hermann's tortoise. Or would it be better to fertilize the plants this year to get them healthier again and wait until next year before letting him eat anything from those plants.

I have the exact same problem with my hibiscus and just purchased Jack's Classic since it is organic and so highly recommended. I guess I am figuring that the health benefits of Arthur eating hibiscus outweighs the risks of the fertilizer, but I am sure some will disagree. I never use pesticides of any kind on my property, and the rest of her diet is weeds and flowers from my own yard or trusted sources.

The fertilizer is not a problem for your tortoise. Just never give the tortoise direct access to the fertilizer itself. Directly ingesting high doses of nitrogen can be deadly for a tortoise.

Fertilizing the plant is a good thing. A plant needs good food. The fertilizer will allow the plant to grow much better and stronger. Any used by the plant as food will not cause the plant to be less nutritious - in fact the opposite!

Keep in mind this is for pure fertilizers, not pesticides. Be sure the fertilizer does not contain systemic pesticides.

Hibiscus are great, mine love it. We use a mix of our own organic compost and turtle nuggets to fertilize the plants and works like a charm. Staying away from most mass market products due to pesticides and strong chemicals etc has been a golden rule since growing"a turtle garden."
