Is the adult Desert Tortoise in your yard? If so, do you have the correct paperwork from the state to keep one in captivity? Just trying to help you avoid any problems.
Never knew I needed paperwork once I found it wasn't illegal to have. One years ago it used to be. Its illegal to remove them from the wild. I never removed um. I had been given the poor thing. I have no idea where it came from just it's now 10years old

To keep one in captivity, you are supposed to "adopt" it from the adoption program. Also a person is not allowed to have more than one at a time.

This AZ Game and Fish Dept. web site may be of help to you:

They won't give you any trouble if you tell them you never knew you had to officially adopt a tortoise in order to keep it. Also, technically, they belong to the state not to an individual private person.

My Banjo! Seven years old, I’ve been a lurker here since I brought him/her home! Thank you all for the guidance! He is eating in one of the rye grass beds we plant for him each year. It grows over the winter so he always has fresh rye grass

I do agree, Maggie -Bob must have been wonderful - you can see so much personality in his face -so much interest and awareness - and affection - the best photo ever. (And I say this despite my love for my little Zola! )
