I have a 16 year old, 5kg male red foot tortoise that I’ve had for 6 years. He came from a former employer that used him for reptile shows, and as one of my show animals, I fostered him while working for this individual.
He was approximately 3.75 kg when I got him, and the enclosure he came with was a 36x18x18 inch glass tank, top soil, a water bowl, and an 18 inch T8 bulb, and this was considered a decent enclosure from my employer- needless to say, I upgraded his enclosure to a 3x6 foot enclosure with T5HO lighting (which I know still is not adequate, but better than 3 feet by 1.5 feet.) When I stopped working for her, I asked to adopt him, as sending him back would mean going back into a small enclosure and back to being a show animal.
As much as I love him, I'm really struggling to keep up with the best care possible for him. He lives in a 3x8 foot enclosure with a mistking that runs on the hour while his lights are on, Arcadia lighting that's routinely tested with a solarmeter, and a partially bioactive enclosure. However- I work in an animal health, and I have 6 other reptiles on top of two dogs and a cat. Realistically, I do not have the energy myself to provide adequate soaking time, proper feeding (he eats largely Mazuri at the moment, which I know isn't appropriate), and adequate socialization and enrichment- I worry the sweet fella is lonely.
He has had recent bloodwork run, full body radiographs, a recent fecal float, and is microchipped. He does have chronic rhinitis with a mildly deviated septum so he has a consistent wheeze, and a known small opacity in his small intestine that is either a chronic foreign body or an enterolith. He does have a moderate amount of pyramiding with a very mild deviation to his vertebral column, but his bone density is good. Despite all of this, he is an otherwise healthy guy.
I'm based in Saskatchewan, Canada, but would be willing to discuss meeting halfway for the appropriate adopter. Please message me if you have any questions about him.
