I'm getting ready to install the new enclosure for Crush, my son's Sulcata tortoise. I have a couple follow-up questions. The enclosure is 3'x4' and based on Tom's design and is well insulated. It came out nice but a lot of work. Crush will be locked in over night unless we decide to put a screen on top of the outside habitat roaming area. We are located in New Braunfels, TX. Crush's outside habitat area is really nice with plenty of shade and sun. The enclosure itself will be shaded most of the time. It can get really hot in New Branufels with many days with heat index over 100 degrees. Based on what I have read, I did not put any ventilation screened holes in the enclosure box. My understanding is that the ventilation holes are not necessary in the summer. While I have purchased the heaters, thermostat, timers, and fan .. it does not seem necessary to install these items until fall to get ready for winter. Winters in NB TX are very mild most of the time howerver once or twice per winter temperatures will drop into the low twenties or teens (mostly by windchill).

So my question is am I correct regarding ventilation not needed and that the air-cirulation fan can be installed along with the heaters. And, yes power is available for all the equipment when needed. I'm also thinking that because Crush can spend his days outside roaming the habitat UV lighting is not necessary inside the box .. is this correct? I could put one on a timer inside box if needed.

Should have gone 4x4, but you'll figure that out yourself soon enough.

Air vents will let hot air in on a hot day, same as letting warm air out on a cold night.

The "heat index" doesn't matter to a tortoise. They don't sweat, so the humidity, which is part of the heat index, doesn't matter. Just the actual temperature matters.

If every night between now and fall isn't staying above 80 degrees, then you need the heating installed now. They should not drop below 80 at night.

I'd love to see pictures of the box. I like checking out people's door and roofs. I'm self taught and not the best carpenter, so I am always trying to learn more and get better.
