    Water habits?

What is your water temperature? How high/deep is the water? Pickle-such a cute name! My Lightning will take his head in/out to rinse but he keeps his head out for the majority of the bath. Early days-he was scared to death to bathe in the sink. Brought his head in and would practically...

Redfoot Enclosure: Is Douglas Fir Plywood Base OK?

Thanks! The plywood is 3/4" thick. I'll add substrate over the tarp/pond liner. Yes. I'm sure it will get heavy. That is my one worry. I don't have to move the enclosure often, but when I do I really need to. I ordered plywood larger than the enclosure to allow for a "margin" to get a...

Redfoot Enclosure: Is Douglas Fir Plywood Base OK?

Is a Douglas Fir Plywood base ok to use for the bottom of my redfoot's enclosure? ... and I mean as the floor and not as the substrate. So it would be: 1. Douglas Fir Plywood Base (is this safe for him?) 2. Raised garden bed on top of plywood (6' x 3' x 2') 4. Pond liner or a tarp over...

New red foot need help with enclosure

I use a T5 HO 5.0 UVB "tube" light. I use the ceramic heat emitters day and night as a T5 does not give enough heat. Mine is in front of a bay window so he gets plenty of natural light but needs the UV of course for proper growth and health. So I don't use a separate basking bulb...

    Soaking in Hard Water?

I'm reading this thread and curious about hard water and it changing the appearance of the shell. I'm noticing that we have slightly hard water in our house and my tortoises shell is getting dull and brown looking. He also has white lines just at the neck line (on the shell). Is a Brita...

    Redfoot Food Items

That's GREAT!!!! What a good tort parent you are! I just thought gentle cacti would be easy greens to keep alive in an enclosure and with this knowledge I'd likely keep it higher up (in its little clay pot) for aesthetics and not for food. You are brave! LOL

Wow really!!?! OMG some of the other sites have it all over the RF. But prickly pear cactus/cactus pads without thorns are ok? Is aloe dangerous? I’d like to put one in the enclosure for some easy green. Still working on organic fern and spider plants

    Redfoot Food Items

Ah! The face of disgust - I know it well LOL. All we can do is keep trying. Mine came from a pet store so I think they fed him pellets and some greens. So it has been a process. We are all here for each other. Thanks for all of the solid advice!

    Redfoot Food Items

Yeah. Timothy Hay sounded off to me. Hay in general for a Redfoot feels off. My Redfoot does not even eat grass when I take him outside. He is not interested.

You are correct. Occasional bell pepper and tomato the vet recommended for vitamins. I give vitamin powder once a week and calcium powder 2x/week. Lightning takes these items when absorbed in food. If “dust” is in the food he won’t eat it. So the bet was suggesting I add these for vitamins...

    Redfoot Food Items

Sorry for all of the questions lately. At our annual vet visit the vet recommended tomatoes bell peppers and Timothy hay for my Redfoot to eat. Timothy hay? Loose? Soaked? I didn’t think they were “grazers”. We eat lots of squash zucchini leafy greens mushroom mango berries and occasional...
