As he sits at the bar, he hears a high-pitched voice say, “Wow! You have such smooth scutes!” The tortoise looks around, sees no one, and turns back to his beer thinking nothing more of it.
A minute later, he hears the same voice say, “All that Mazuri has made you so big and strong!” Again, the tortoise looks around and doesn’t see anyone and goes back to his drink, wondering if there’s something wrong with his ear flaps.
Finally, when the Galapagos’s nerves have settled down and he believes the voice is gone, he hears, “Your breeder must be so proud of you!!”
The tortoise then slams down his drink and looks around wildly. Frustrated that he cannot find the source of the voice, the giant calls over the bartender.
“Hey barkeep, what’s that voice I keep hearing? You hearing it too?”
“Oh those are the peanuts,” the bartender replies. “They’re complimentary.”
