Hi. I haven't been on in a while as Billy is staying somewhere else for a couple of weeks. But I have a problem and I thought what better place to share it then on the tortoise forum. Here we go. Although I am only young still I know I want to be a vet when I am older. I want to specialise in an animal but before that you have to do three years of all animals. And the majority animals are dogs guinea pigs, rabbits and other fluffy pets. Unfortunately I am allergies to some dogs, hay, guinea pigs, horses and probably some other animals I haven't heard of. I am aware I might grow out of it but what should I do if I don't?Also I know there is medication but some people say it cures the allergy but has massive side effects like bloated and off coloured limbs and some other things. :);)

Most people just take daily allergy meds and get through it. It sucks but if it's wha you want to do you may have to suffer through it.
My girlfriend is allergic to cats and has 2, it's her favorite animal. She takes a double dose of Reactine daily.

The vet I used to use for my dogs and cats had no pets of his own because he is/was allergic. I'm not sure if he used any medication. But, if they are not living in your home and you're not sleeping in a home where they live you may be ok.

I want to be a vet to. I am also young and have allergies. If something should happen that I couldn't get medicine or shots for it I probably work through it so I continue doing what I love. If u love what u do u never work a day in your life

I used to have guinea pigs when I was a kid. One time I took them to the vet and the vet was sniffling and sneezing. We asked if he was OK and he told us he was allergic to two things - Guinea pigs and grass. He had mowed the grass that morning before coming to check my guinea pig! Hahaha

But it didn't affect how he treated my pets. If your reactions are manageable and not severe, don't let it stop you! Maybe allergy shots can help lower your reactions?

I know a few people that are allergic to cats. The biggest thing that would help you besides meds, would be to wash your hands after touching them, or wear gloves, don't rub your eyes before washing and where clothing that the hair won't stick too. Also, keeping the area cleaned up of the pet hair. While in school, you could let them know about your allergies and they may be considerate of it with letting you do certain things to lessen the problem. Other then that, meds and suffering through it is about all there is. Hopefully you will grow out of it in time.

You can take allergy shots.
I was gonna suggest this too. You have to be committed to them initially in order for them to work, but I know many people who have used this with success :)

Good luck
